I'm Scott Cooper and I'm an artist and graphic designer working out of Dallas, TX. I was born in Corpus Christi, TX, where I first began my journey as an artist. I graduated from Texas A&M Corpus Christi in 2005, with a BFA in Studio Art with a focus on drawing and printmaking.
After a few years of making work in Austin, TX, I moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where I decided to go back to school and get another degree, this time in graphic design. I graduated from the Memphis College of Art with a BFA in graphic design in 2012, and since then have worked as a designer in both a freelance and commercial capacity.
In my fine art, I prefer to work with pencils/graphite, and charcoal and chalk pastels in particular. I genuinely enjoy the tactile sensation of being the conduit between the medium itself and the paper. When I can, I like to work on a fairly large scale, as there's an amazing sensation of virtually being enveloped within the piece, almost like working to bring forth the image from the inside out.
Much of my subject matter is a study of the human condition from my own personal experiences, primarily my relationship with chronic illness, loss, addiction, depression, and the story of how they came to shape me. Motherhood and gender identity have also been consistently heavy themes in my work, and mental illness specifically plays a huge part in the imagery and content of my oeuvre.
I approach my design work by weaving together the principles of fine art and graphic design, creating a harmonious blend where the two can intersect. Even the simplest projects, like business cards or logos, can carry profound significance when crafted with the right intent. I strive to uncover the relationship between fine art and functional design, elevating these projects to spark an extra layer of dialogue with the viewer/user.
